Tomberries anyone??
« on: April 24, 2012, 13:29 »
having brought the Tomatoes from Sainsbury's last year and harvested the seeds I ended up with about 20 plants selected the best and now have several growing in large pots in my conservatory. Has anyone else grown these before if so how high should I let them get? before I can expect to start seeing some flowers (and therefore fruit)   ???
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

Sorry i havent got a clue!
Ive done this too-father in law died in November and there was just 1 of his homegrown tomatoes in his fridge.
Missus wouldnt let me eat it or throw it and it was in danger of rotting in my fridge at Christmas!
So managed to talk her into letting me ferment the pulp to get the seeds for growing this year.
The problem is i dont know if it was an F1 tomato or determinate/indeterminate-but i do know one thing, before this she had no interest in my veg growing, but now these tomato plants get looked after better than me and the kids-owt for a quiet life!
I usually stop my toms after 5 trusses and so will do the same if it produces any!
Political Correctness-a concept based on the idea that its possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

do think its wise to stop them before they even set trusses?? as the original tomato was only the size of a largish pea? would stopping actually encourage the plant to start directing all its energy in to making fruit?   ???   I think I will try it with one

you have to have a truss to get fruit, so I'm not sure what you mean by 'stopping them before they even set trusses'

What you have is an ordinary tomato plant with very small fruits - it may be a bush or a cordon tomato, so I wouldn't start pinching anything out before it has decided how it will fruit

ok thank you, but I thought if i stopped them growing taller they would concentrate on growing fruit ?? I'm wrong then  :)

it doesn't quite work like that tbh..........it might encourage more green growth rather than more flowers/fruit.
I think at this stage it might confuse things even more If I tried to explain the different kinds of tomato plants......wait 'til you get the first flowers then post some pics of what the plants look like .......... we'll sort it out from there  :)

Is that fair enough?  :)

I did google my question and it does seem I can only encourage more flowers by stopping their growth when they are already producing flowers so I will hold tight, it looks like they will be a cordon type as they are now producing side shoots.    :)

I'm puzzled by this

but if you think you have it all sorted then -  Good Luck with it  :)

By stopping the growth there is no where that the truss can come from, the truss grows from the stem. Which is why people stop growing at 5 or so.

An you post a pic? How big is it? It could be the seed
New grower here - handle with care!!
