Can you direct station sow brassicas?
« on: April 24, 2012, 19:56 »
Why do we grow brassica's in modules (me), or seed beds (others) can't I station sow them direct, my soil is light and crumbly easy to make a fine tilth. I germinated them outside in modules so its not temperature?

Slugs always eat my brassica seedlings, given half a chance.

Other than that, no idea!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

As brassicas take such a long time to grow they take up the ground for too long.  If you grow in modules or seed beds you can use the ground for another crop first, I put mine in after my first early potatoes.

The slugs will eat them if they get a chance, also pigeons love them.  One good reason is if you have club root, you can grow the plants to a good size before planting them and this helps.

brassicas like to be transplanted and produce a better root system and crop than when station sowed - or so say the experts:

It also gives you the chance to replant the seedlings nice and deeply  ;)

looks like i'll have to trial it I cover to protect from pigeons anyway and our soil is alkaline so clb root should be ok. copper wire would control slugs. So it the root system really I'll have to try half and half with somethink let you know what happens.

You won't get the opportunity to bury the stem lower as you prick out and plant out in order to make the plant more stable when it comes to wind rock.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
