my happy acre is at home and none of my neighbours have anything but shrubs and lawns -- hence I never get any advice -- hence I read a lot and research a lot and experiment and occasionally cock it up but usually do very well. I can tell you catagorically that in my experience there is nothing wrong with north to south rows or growing strawberries next to beetroot. There are many things that strawberries should never follow but beetroot is not even amongst that list either. They are, in my opinion, talking rubbish because they know no better or think you don't.

As already stated ignore them, I have been gardening on an off for nearly 40 years and the only things I avoid are growing carrotts and parsnips were I have recently added manure and when I grow runner beans I aways plant them north to south in an effort not  to deprive other plants of sun light.

research as wide as you can but be sure it is relevant to your climate etc, a couple of basic books help such as the John Harrison ones or Doctor Hessian but also much good stuff in webpages and catalogues of suppliers eg Ken Muir for Strawberries and fruit etc
