Not all spinach is the same so the back of the seed packet is the first place to look 

There will be varieties for sowing all year round pretty much.

I've sown one lot early but will sow some more, probably early September for a late picking

I like to sow Bordeaux in September.  It grows like stink

What's it say on the packet? I'll be sowing for the first time ever this weekend not something I've grown before, but I'm going to sow here and there in a few gaps over the next few months the wife loves it.

do you need to sow a lot to get a good yield?
as in to get enough to make say a pasta dish with it?
never grown it before

No, you don't need to sow a lot of it to get a good yield. There are loads of different varieties so you could be sowing at all times of the year to make sure you have a constant supply
