Mushroom kit dissapointment
« on: April 14, 2012, 17:54 »
I got a mushroom kit from Aldi for £3.99 which depicted mushrooms growing in abundance on the photo. I got one yield that was nowhere near as much. Then I got one or two more but the soil kept drying out. The box said 3 yields. I kept it damp but had to throw the latter growing mushrooms as they were going brown and rotten. Would have been cheaper to buy them from the supermarket  :(

which is what most people decide once they've tried the kits.  :(

At least you only paid £3.99, I paid £9.99 from the garden centre and had the same disapointing results.

from what i have read they are all like this - its such a shame as it would be great to have mushrooms on tap.

Id love to learn how to pick wild mushrooms but keep getting put off trying it.

I bought the same kit. It costs me £1.25 for a normal punnet of mushrooms, which I buy weekly. So far from the kit, I've had two enormous mushrooms which grew individually to almost 4 inches across the cap and separately a crop of three which were each considerably bigger than the normal sized ones in the supermarket punnet. It appears to be growing a few more still. I'd say I've just about had my £3.99 worth. :)

I was very lucky to have a way above-average zoology and botany schoolteacher who literally "went the extra mile" and took any interested pupils around the woods in autumn to identify and explain all about the different fungi.
If only I'd been listening a bit more attentively!  :(  :nowink:

I've also tried a mushroom growing kit (button mushrooms) and like many others the results didn't justify the expenditure (good fun though!)

I did see some seeds (not sure who the supplier was). Has anybody tried them? Just curious as in future years we might put a few racks up to grow mushroom...

Hi, I've just been reading through the forum and had to join to reply to this. I bought my mushie kits from a local £ shop but have not tried them yet as it says to keep them at 20 degrees or so (Heating is a luxury in our house!)

I will post when I do grow them, hopefully with good news!!   :D

Be thankful you have had the results you have had.

I have been brought mushroom plugs and drilled logs for growing them - zilch, been brought kits, etc but nothing - not one single mushroom!  Thank goodness they were gifts - still disappointing though.
