Diatom in composter
« on: April 15, 2012, 22:32 »
Hello all, just had a thought, if I put old coop bedding in the composter when cleaning out coop would the diatomaceous earth kill the worms in the compost bin? It's said to help clear internal worms though I use to keep red mite at bay, cheers, Claire  :)

Doesn't seem to have much effect on compost worms. The whole point of Diatom is it's very sharp (under a microscope) and will scratch the carapace of insects such as mites, causing them to die through dehydration. That said, the bugs in the compost seem ok too......
It may be good for digestion but there's no proof it controls intestinal worms.
