Green Manures.
« on: March 30, 2012, 12:27 »
Another question

Once the early potatoes have been earthed up, would there be any advantage to sowing green manures, Mustard or Phycelia in the space between the rows of potatoes. The thought being to dig in the green manure as the earlys are lifted.
The plan is to grow Sprouts Cauliflower ect. for use in Dec.Jan and Feb when they are at their most expensive in the early spud plot.
Also, I know you must not apply farmyard manure and lime at the same time but does this apply to green manures and lime?

I personally wouldn't grow green manures in the ridges between spuds.

It will prevent you earthing up, and provide competition for the hungry and thirsty potatoes as they grow.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Gotta agree that the competition from the green manures would mean smaller potatoes unless you've got very rich soil and loadsa water on tap.

That business about manure and lime not mixing is, I think, cos the nitrates in the manure react with the lime to produce ammonia, which basically means you lose nitrogen, and on that basis you'd lose the nitrogen, or some of it, from the green manures too.

But I could be wrong.   I'm one of those who's read a lot and done a little, and I'd rather be the other way round....
