Old Compost.
« on: March 30, 2012, 20:35 »
I saved last years compost out of my tomato pots. I chopped it up, roots and all, (not stems) really fine, added some growmore to perk it up a bit and over wintered it in a big bin. I have no intention of using it for any veggies, but thought it would be ok for my chrysanth cuttings and splitting alpines and repotting. They don't seem to be responding too well to it. Would you sling the whole kaboodle, or is it in anyway useable for anything? Tight Yorkshireman you see.

have you used root hormone powder for cuttings?

try using it for seeds and see what results you get.

I always use my old tomato compost for my lettuce in a big old plastic box I use, I 1/2 fill with old compost and then add new on top, then I tip the 1/2 I have taken off onto the compost heap, never have any problems.

You don't even have to add new.

Old compost will easily support crops like lettuce & radish.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well, my tommy compost should be good stuff. I mix loads of well rotted manure in, courtesy of a local farmer whose land I shoot on. I let it dry out and bung it through thre garden shredder before adding it to the shop bought stuff.
