For the past 3-4 years Ive grown spuds quite successfully in large containers and planters (no space in garden veg patch). However, the spuds always seem to be at or near the bottom, with only a few nearer the top. Given the depth of the containers, I always hope to find them full to brim of harvest!

I'm wondering if I earth up too quickly - I tend to cover the growth as it pokes through (mainly to protect from frost). Do you think I should be letting it grow on a bit before earthing up?

Or am I being greedy?! Or maybe it's something else I'm doing wrong (over / under watering)?!

I think.  .  .  .

that in keenly earthing up your spuds you are hiding the leaves from the rays of the sun.  Earth up by all means but earth up to just under the leaves so they can do their work and grow you more spuds.  Keep a cloche of some kind nearby or bend over the tops of the bags in case of a late frost.      Cheers,    Tony.
