pea seed any good?
« on: March 25, 2012, 22:25 »
I made a sowing of pea "Canoe" two weeks ago today. The packet was an old one, maybe been open for a couple of years, and i couldnt resist checking as nothing has shown. I found one that was swollen up, white and fairly soft but with no root at all. So i checked another and it was the same. I felt sure that in 2 weeks they would have at least started developing a root of some discription. Maybe leave it a week and resow with fresh seed if noyhing happens?

Next time you have old seed, it is worth chitting it first to see if it's viable  ;)

I think, you can over water pea seed, because they take a long time to germinate, they tend to go rotten before germination, my poly ones, didn't come out at all, the ones on the windowsill in my house did, they had less water, only when they were dry did I put a few spoonfuls on water on them, they all came out
If Its Not Growing... Its Dead.

Peas are very tough blighters. You can grow the dried ones from the supermarket.
Maybe you haven't left them long enough?

They should have shown something by now.

I sowed some "mushy" peas 9 days ago, I noticed after a week that one had popped to the surface,it had a 2" root on it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sorry....didn't register 2 weeks. My sugarsnaps and mangetout were sown a week ago in a raised bed outside and are coming up in this glorious (rainless) weather.
Could be too wet or possibly too warm. Are they inside? Peas don't mind a bit of cold when germinating.

They are outside, in the ground a couple of inches on a bed of compost. were watered once when sowing, no water since

I just looked at some peas I had sown in the greenhouse a couple of weeks ago. A few have come up but most have rotted. They were fresh seed.

Could well have been too warm & wet, ideal rotting conditions.

Strange, isn't it..you would think they would like it warm and wettish. I didn't think they were too wet, but must be wrong. It has been very hot in my greenhouse. 100°f+ in the sun.

Peas don't like it too warm.

You get a far better crop sowing in open ground at the end of March than you do in June.
