Borax For Greenhouse Cleaning ?
« on: March 11, 2012, 22:42 »
For the last two seasons i have used Sulpher Smoke bombs to clean my greenhouse prior to sowing.I read a gardeners comment on the internet today in which they stated that Sulpher bombs actually damage Alluminium Greenhouse causing them to corode. With this in mind i am looking for an alternative method of cleaning.
I understand that Borax is used as a cleaning agent and is excellent in killing mold.Do you think i could use Borax to clean my alluminium Greenhouse without damaging the Alluminium frame.?
Or i could use good old fashion Jeyes fluid.
I would like your opinions please.

I don't think borax will damage the aluminium. :)

I believe that borax has mild anti-fungal properties, probably too mild to do the job of nuking greenhouse nasties.

Sulphur smoke bombs will be more effective and have been used for years without apparent problems, but on their own won't get rid of the debris in the nooks and crannies which harbour potential pests.

I used a garden hose on "jet" setting to dislodge as much assorted algae, cobwebs and debris as I could, then used diluted Jeyes fluid to wash everything down, left for an hour, then rinsed down with the hose again. (Tip: make sure you disconnect the connections to your water butt/s if you have them - I realised only just in time that the water reaches the guttering even from the inside!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

We used borax as a water softener so I'm not sure how clean it will get your greenhouse.
