Hi, Can anybody tell me if there is a rule about apple and pear trees on allotments. my mum in law has apple and pear trees in her garden that are not massive but gain tons of fruit each year. Is there lottie rules about larger fruit trees in general or do each council have their own rules on larger trees. I have always wanted an apple tree. I grew up with an apple tree and loved home made apple pies from it. My own garden is a bit little

Each allotment will have it's own rules on fruit trees so it's best to check.  Do you have enough room for a tree on a dwarfing rootstock in the garden?

As Ice say - own rules, not overall ones. We can't, but there's a lot on site from before this rule came into being and from seeing the size of some of the apple trees and the shade they cast on other plots, you can see why it came into being.

 Thanks I am very considerate and believe others should have a right to light. I had a garden ruined once due to neighbouring trees. Dwarfing rootstock what are these? My mum in-law said she saw fruit trees that grew on kinda shelves once I did not have a clue what she meant

Fruit trees do not grow on their own roots - the variety is grafted onto different roots.

Apples have one range of different roots; pears, another; and so on.

The roots dictate the size of the eventual tree.  So you can get an apple variety which grows to different size trees, depending on the rootstock.

Dwarfing rootstocks are those which produce the smallest fully grown trees.
