tomato seedlings
« on: March 12, 2012, 08:41 »
my first attempt at growing tomatoes....my seeds have germinated as ive had them in the house, is it safe to transfer them to the cold frame or do they still need to be kept at the germination temperature?

Too chilly for them out there yet -- tomatoes like the same temperatures as we do, so if it is too cold for us out there , it is too cold for them, especially at night

Keep them safe and snug with plenty of light (not direct sunlight aas they will scorch)

It's too cold overnight for a cold frame, they need a minimum temp of 10C. You'll have to keep them in the house and employ the aluminium foil trick.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You need to aim for a minimum temperature of about 10C - that's not likely to happen in a cold frame at this time of year I'm afraid.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I don't know how you could have missed it, the number of times it's been posted this year!

Place some foil behind the plants, so that the plant is between it and the light source. It increases the amount of light greatly.

Brassicas don't like heat so the worst thing you can do is bring them indoors!

Tomatoes need a consistent temperature of at least 10 degrees C and will sulk if they drop below this - possibly permanently stunted.  If you don't have a heated greenhouse it's far too early to start them off.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
