Another onion question....sorry!
« on: March 12, 2012, 12:54 »
Hi all, I planted some sets last autumn, they all have healthy leaf growth & out of curiosity I took one out at the weekend.

The original "set" has gone & all that remains is a plant about the size & form of a small spring onion, there is no bulb as such & nothing except greenery showing above the soil.
The original sets were planted with about 1/2" showing above the soil level.
Did I plant too deep or is this normal.
I planted some more sets at the weekend just in case  :)

I also have plenty of seed gathered from last year, is now a good time to plant in an unheated greenhouse.

Thanks.

This is a fairly common question now - I asked it myself in my first year of growing autumn planted onions!

The answer is that this is perfectly normal - the bulb part shrinks down over winter then swells as the weeks/months go by. So, no problem.

As for your question about seed - some might say a bit late now but I'm certainly going to put down some red onion seed soon, having already planted some white onion seed about 5 weeks ago. I'll plant some sets too though - belt and braces approach. You can't have too many onions!
