Moneymaker and gardener's delight are fairly bland flavours to begin with (in my opinion) and nothing will perk them up. Roma is a paste tomato, more for bottling and sauces, so strong flavour isn't part of its genetic makeup.

If you want flavours of other varieties to be tart, choose toms with tart flavours to begin with, like jaune flamme, green zebra, Paul Robeson, etc. And give them weekly sidedressings with either manure tea or comfrey tea to enhance fruit flavour.

OK guys, thanks for all the replies.

I am pretty sure that none of the seeds were F1 hybrids.

I saved seed for the moneymaker, gardeners delight and the tiny tomatoes.

The tiny toms were from a tomato that came from the supermarket about 4 years ago and I have been saving the seed ever since. A picnic at RHS flower show; a friend had bought them from Sains.

In fact I have been saving the other seeds for the same time.

I watered every night,  and fed them with tomato fertiliser every couple of weeks.

I know taste is subjective but these are toms that I have grown every year and I know what they should taste like and this year they didn't.

The texture was floury.
The only tomatoes that tasted reasonable were the tiny toms that originated from the supermarket and even those weren't as good as usual.

This year I have sown a few of several varieties. The same as last year, Roma (half a packet I had left from last year) and some Alicante, ( free packet).

I am not mean about buying new seed, I just like the idea of saving my own. No honest!

I am dead mean about buying clothes but never when it comes to buying stuff for the garden.

like i said earlier i know what you mean with the flour like texture (with hardley any seeds, if any!) and to be honest it was when i was growing roma (havent grown them since) - so maybe it is down to the variety.

I save my own seed every year and last year the toms that were undercover were tasteless and the same variety grown on the lotty were fine.

On reading some of the threads here it was suggested that because we had such a bad summer with warm days but the evening temprature dropping dramatically, it affected the flavour of the indoor grown plants.
