Curly kale - no club root...
« on: February 19, 2012, 06:37 »
I hoiked out the remaining stems on Friday, and out of all twenty-four, none of them had a sign of club root!

I find this rather astonishing, as there have been hot-spots of the dreaded condition within a few feet of their double row, but nope, not a sign! Any views anyone?

They did get hammered a bit by white fly though, and have you ever tried spraying curly kale - I mean, how many years have you got...;0)

What variety is it?

Is it a variety that is resistant to club root but the breeders have not noticed it, especially if it is an old variety.

Does anyone grow this variety and how are the roots?

apparently kale is naturally resistant/tolerant of club root so not affected by the disease  ;)

It was T and M's 'Scarlet' Sal.

It got plastered with fly, but actually that didn't matter too much, as Mrs G would blast it with a strong tap, and then we'd watch the blighters go down the drain...

The roots were pretty good considering they'd been chucked in one day when I had a spare moment...

Good hardy green (red) stuff to grow if all else fails! We used to buy Snasberries' kale, and of course, don't do that now!

As Ann says, they do not suffer from it, also broccoli and sprouting broccoli, radish. They get it, just seem not to be much affected.

It would seem that there is research being carried out where the resistant gene has been identified and inserted into the DNA of the susceptible crops

I didn't know that Babs, club root really is a pain when it gets hold!

Kale used to be just for cattle when I was a kid...
