Tomato Spray
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:08 »
Hi was reading a 1995 copy of organic gardening there was an article about flying pests in the greenhouse they say this this acts as an irritant and makes your plants less attractive to them can be used against cabbage white as well .

Tomato Spray
ingredients
leaves and stems of tomato plant (side shoots will do) and water.

Method
shred the leaves and stems or side shoots.fill a container with them and cover with hot water. allow to stand for six hours before straining . spray the plants when the fly is around.
keep allotments alive grow your own

ive never heard about the tomato leafs/stems being used in a spray to protect tomato plants from pests, but i have heard of other natural sprays against pests, for example:

rhubarb leafs - boil them, put in spray bottle and spray on plants
garlic - same as rhubarb leafs

however ive never tried them, so i dont know if they work, im sure someone will be along in a bit with more knowledge!

thanks
matt

Please read this article by the site owner about home-made sprays (it applies to fertilisers as well as pesticides):

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

have you thought about companion planting in your greenhouse instead of sprays, for example planting basil or marigolds near you toms, i think they mask the smell of the toms, its was on gardeners world last year (monty don planted basil below his toms).

i should imagine there will be a thread about companion planting somewhere.

thanks

Marigolds worked in my ghouse last year. I didn't have to spray anything. I'll be doing the same this year.
