Here's an article that discusses the problems of mineral deposits on internal organs, and supports the use of acidifiers to counter some of these problems:

Hi all,
I am also a novice chicken keeper and My 3 are ex barn system hens and are feathering up really well.
Anyway, I have 1 of my 3 laying soft/thin shelled eggs.
I have put oyster shell in the run and in the feed, but this does not seem to have helped alot.  It seems cyclical and I was wondering if it is related to the Verm-x liquid I sometimes put in the water?
I was wondering about sesame seed as this seems high in calcium, or some other green that would help eg broccoli or spinach?
Just abit worried about calcium build up, having read the thread on this!

Thank you Lindeggs.
I really appreciate your input.  She never appeared unhappy when she was laying soft shelled eggs but I really didn't want it to carry on as it was always happening at night and then all of the chickens seemed so tired the next day after their midnight snack!!
I think I'm pretty much following your advice anyway.  I've stopped the Limestone Flour, put out food in more feeders (which would never have occured to me so thank you Joyfull), started the Calcivet later in the day rather than in the morning and yesterday I started the ACV in the drinkers.  Today we had an egg from her which had her hardest shell yet (hard for her!).  I'll leave things as they are for a few more days and then gradually stop the Calcivet and see what happens.
Many thanks.

Hi Henwood
I'm afraid I don't know anything about 'ex barn system hens' or Verm-x but I'm sure someone will help you out shortly.

There's no answer for the info about sesame seeds, does anyone know if they'll help as my black rock is laying frail eggs, last 2 days have been broken on collection  :(
