Need help
« on: January 30, 2012, 19:00 »

Hi there I'm completely new to keeping chickens so I need help I've built my coop and run all ready and got every thing In Place so all I need now is the girls I live in Newport south Wales so if any one knows any breeders close would be appreciated if you could let me know. Also need help on choosing the breed after reading lots off books they say that rhode island reds are well suited to beginners and backyard runs but could any one suggest a better breed to look at, another question would be age off hen as well am I best trying to get young birds so they grow up in the run or as a beginner is it better to get a bird a little bit older. As you can see I do need help any advice well be welcomed.
Many thanks
The chicken beginner

I can't answer most of your questions but there's a list of poultry breeders on the main website here:
http://www.poultry.allotment-garden.org/poultry-suppliers/poultry-suppliers-wales.php

You won't be able to buy anything through the forums though - that's not allowed I'm afraid.

I'm sure others will be along shortly to discuss the finer details of chickens  :)

PS Welcome to the site :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

We started with 3rd hand ex battery hens a year ago almost by mistake, but when we wanted to increase the flock we went to a local farm where they buy in POL hybrids every spring: 6 birds at £6.50 and they've laid nearly every day since....and they've been very easy and very sociable.  Might go back this spring - and maybe next - for another couple so we don't end up with girls who are all the same age.

Hybrids are good for 1st time keepers and i would advise P.O.L (point of lay)

R.I.R, Bluebells, Black rocks, Warrens - Easy to manage and tame and will lay almost all year round for you.

Also if you are on facebook for example, there are lots of poultry pages on there. HTH?
X2 Black Rock's
                         = 4 FRESH EGGS EVERYDAY!!!
X2 Warren's

Think about what you want from your hens. Hybrids can be docile, will lay very well in their first couple of years and be good for a beginner. They are also generally cheaper to buy.

Pure bred hens will lay less but over a longer period of years and will generally live longer. They will cost more too.

I started off with a couple of rhode rock type hybrids who are now about 2 and their laying is starting to decrease now and I am hoping to get 1/2 pure breds in the spring.

If eggs aren't so important to you then you may be looking for a more ornamental type of pure breed.

Also think about the environment you will be keeping them in. Some birds are more capable flyers than others which may be a problem if you have a garden with low fences. Some breeds are easier to handle than others, some are generally noisier than others.

I would have a look at the breeds that are available at poultry sellers within your area and then do a bit of research online. As mwntioned above there is a list of poultry suppliers on this website. I also found 1 near to Usk earlier today when I was looking for suppliers in south Wales (I am from Cardiff) , which may be useful: . http://www.cosyhens.co.uk/. I haven't checked them out yet but they aren't too far from Newport so may be worth a shot.

Hope this is of help. Whatever you choose I am sure you won't regret it, have fun!

One tip I can give you is to go for hens laying different colours of egg. That way you know who's laying which allows you to keep a check on general health as well.
I started with 3 hybrids (Bluebelle, Magpie and White Star)
All young birds can be flighty but they get more staid as they get older and heavier, although mine (I have 6 now) still fly up and down the garden to stretch their wings.
White Stars (any Leghorn really) are the most flighty and supposedly not so friendly but I haven't had any escape yet!!!
And they lay such lovely large white eggs. :D

Hi chicken beginner... welcome to the very addictive world of hen keeping :)

As you are a beginner I would definitely recommend you get some POL hybrids.  Point of lay birds are sold at between 14 and 18 weeks of age, and most hybrid hens will start laying at between 18 and 26 weeks of age.

Hybrids tend to by hardy and robust, and these days come in all sorts of colours and shapes.

Thank you all for the advice I'm starting to look more at the hybrids and have been in touch with the cosy hens company I haven't really started keeping chickens yet and am all ready addictived to them. Hopefully fingers crossed I will have my first chickens and will post photos as soon as possible.

Once again many thanks to every one
