Thinking of getting Wyandotte bantams as broodys
« on: January 25, 2012, 15:03 »
I am thinking of getting a couple of Wyandotte bantams as broodys but don't know much about the breed and size of them.  Have read a bit online and it says they are not a really small bantam and that they do go broody quite often.  Has anyone got or had this breed as I would like to know more about their temperament etc.  My other option was Serama hens but would like them to brood hens eggs (meat birds) and quail eggs (not at the same time).  Do you think that the Serama might be too small to brood hens eggs.  Any advice would be great.

P.S.  How do you pronounce "Wyandotte"!!

Beware being told that a certain breeds make good broodies. Whilst some will be more prone to going broody it is not a given. I'm on my third lot of Light Sussex which are supposed to go broody at the drop of a hat. I'm still waiting! :D :D :D

Thanks for the info Sassy, will just have to get them and see.  Hopefully one of them will go broody, I intend to leave plenty of eggs in their nest box to try and encourage them.  If I end up with too many broody hens I will give you a shout in case you need to borrow one.   :D

They are supposed to be the best broodies and are also known as clockers :)

My dotte bantams are very small - less than a pound in weight.  I doubt they'd be able to cover more than 3 hen eggs conformatably.

I haven't any experience with broodiness in them, as this is their first winter. :)

Three eggs would be fine by me and hopefully they will be able to cover more quail eggs.

I would like to introduce my 2 new girls (partridge wyandotte bantams).

Thanks bantam novice, have just had an email to say some muscovy ducklings I was wanting have hatched!  Didn't expect them until the spring so hubby will have to get busy making a home for them.

They are gorgeous!  We have had two wyandotte bantams & both went broody very frequently.  One was extremely neurotic & very noisy, and not the best mother (our pekin adopted her brood and they seemed to share the workload!), but they're all so different.  Good luck!
