Covering garlic?
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:19 »
Hi

I planted some garlic in october and was expecting some shoots to appear about nowish or even later. They started to peek through in November and are now about 5" high!

Do i just leave them through the frost and treat in the same way as my over wintering onions or do they need a bit of fleece over them?

Just concerned as I don't know how big they would normally get before the last of the frost.

Ta muchly.

Tough as old boots - leave them.

They stood last winter OK and this is nothing in comparison.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Leave them.  :)

Tough as boots in my experience.

I planted my over-wintering garlic in October 2010 and - because we had a bad year last year - forgot all about them  Two rows! I pulled half a row up this weekend and the bulbs have each split into their separate cloves and each one has sprouted!

Not best practice, but I'm just going to leave the remainder where they are and let them get on with it... just as an experiment in laziness if nothing else.  ::)
