Can garlic be transplanted?
« on: December 28, 2011, 17:25 »
Hi all,

Thought i'd show myself again now me and my son are back in the garden,

I have a query, last years garlic was grown in containers due to lack of space, and was rubbish. It appeared to not grow much at all and was unusable. I pulled a quarter of it and chucked it, but begger me if the rest are not growing now vigurously!

Trouble is, there all bunched up, can they be seperated and transplanted elsewhere?

Welcome back, Zak!

I don't see why not, it's often started off in trays of compost, it's as tough as old boots. It may well have bulbed and what was a clove may well be a few now and you'll have to try & separate them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi Dave!

Yes, im going to try and get on a bit more. My eldest lad (8y) is taking over half the plot this year, so we could be needing some support! His patch last year did the best

It does look like they did bulb up, but just didnt grow very big. Might keep them in the tub and see how they do.

Sams mad keen on getting his half of the plot, I gave him Johns latest book for Christmas, and of all the books he got that was the only one he unwrapped and actually sat down to look through!

My plot is not ready yet so I have planted all my garlic into 3" pots awaiting for the spring.. they are now in my Greenhouse and growing well. Hopefully they should be good..

It doesn't cost anything, Zak.

It's nice to see you around. Happy New Year!

I hope you do not have clay laid out for that 8 year old. :D

I often find bunches of missed garlic growing well in spring and I always dig it up, carefully pull apart all the individual plants and quickly replant them. Always have good success with them because they've already grown all winter so they'll now start to divide with the extra space I've just given them. Its hard to do anything wrong with garlic other than try to grow it in smallish pots.

Nice to see you back, Zak
