Potatoes
« on: December 29, 2011, 15:06 »
Hi All,

I've managed to buy all the seeds I require for the new season, however i have not yet ordered my potatoes.
Due to space restrictions im only planting a main crop variety, but i was wondering when is the best time to order and plant them?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

Steve

You don't say where you are - it would be useful if you could edit your location into your profile - but maincrop seed potatoes can be planted outside in April, earlier or later depending on where you are in the UK. Buy them from next month in nurseries, garden centres or online. :)

For what it's worth, I agree with Argyllie.  :D
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just a thought Steve -- if you are only growing maincrops due to space restrictions, have you considered the first earlies have th shortest period in the ground, and so would free up space sooner than maincrops would?

To follow on... the earlies are great new spuds and follow with other veg when main crop spuds are really cheap to buy and hardly makes tying up a big patch of valuable space worthwhile.

I would somewhat follow suit and say, if you are short of space, you might well consider growing a second early - that stores well and needs less room - or an early maincrop.

It is also a good plan against blight. Somewhat or fully blight resistant potatoes tend to be huge plants.

From second earlies I can warmly recommend Charlotte and Orla, almost certainly there are others, that tend to do and store well. From early maincrop, Sante is an excellent all rounder and good cropper. With early planting, can be lifted and over with in June. With good yields in rich soil.

All of these shall be available in any good garden centre in the coming months. It could be an equally good idea, to go for a day out to a biggish potato fair. You can buy from 10p a piece individual tubers, so still can grow a variety even if space is limited.
