Croutons...
« on: December 31, 2011, 05:46 »
Rainie came up with a fabulous recipe a few days ago,

How about making croutons with a nutty bread.

Cook short strips of bacon until crisp, add cherry tomatoes to warm through. Pour dressing of olive oil, white wine vinegar, coarse grain mustard over bacon and tomatoes. Place various lettuce leaves on plate, add cooked bacon and tomatoes, add croutons, drizzle dressing over and garnish with chopped chives.

Croutons will only take a few minutes in the already hot oven, bacon and tomatoes only take a few minutes whilst putting leaves onto plates.

We make croutons for soup quite regularly, and after a serious revisit to all those bits of loaf which are still hanging around, we gave them a seeing to again yesterday.

What amazes me, is that something as basic as chunks fried bread can be sold with a tiny breath of garlic  for actual money! I mean, use old bread, mix with cement, package up and rake in the dosh...

Mind boggles!

It's got to be both hasn't it MOS and KC!

Mind you, I'm considering trying some fried swede sliced thin today, so that may put a few people off my culinne, kullinneral, culoolener cooking skills...;0)

(Mrs Growster doesn't know that yet...;0)

I find swede makes nice spiced wedges, but takes a bit longer to cook than potatoes or pumpkins  ;)

lucky you, I'm down to the last one, although it is a whopper. Hope it's not too woody

I still like 'em if they're woody Mum!

After all, they're grated and easy to eat, and pretty wholesome too!

Yes, mind boggling that anyone would pay for them!!  I just stick my bread (crusts 'n' all) into the food processor, whizz for a few seconds until the desired consistency, and then freeze.  My husband is a coeliac (wheat intolerant), so I always make sure I have some in the freezer for coating home-made scotch eggs, fish fillets, etc., etc.  And our granddaughter prefers our home-made chicken nuggets too!
