I have 5 plants under plastic sheet, one produced two potatos of the size of egg core.

all of them are going to spend their Christmas in the nice big compost bin!

Finally turfed out the two potato bags in the greenhouse. Had just enough for a meal (from decent sized down to the size of a pea!). Not technically a success but was still fun ferreting them out (small things make me happy)!  :D

I put mine in late - in potato bags - late Aug  I thnk.  As soon as frost threatened I put them in the greenhouse.  I think they were Charlottes, I got them from good old JBA.

Had a rootle round on Christmas Day and found some lovely perfect little baby new potatoes.  Not sure about yield, I just rootled until I got enough for us but there are plenty left I think.

We did forget to put the heater on several occasions and in the end we didn't bother, we figured the soil in the bags would provide a frost barrier - and indeed it did.  And we've had some pretty hard frosts.  Just left he greenhouse door firmly closed.

Hvae to say I've been so pleased with potatoes in patio bags this year  - did a load in spring too (they just come out so clean and problem free) that I'll do more of them this year, and grow less of them on the plot.   Leaves more room for other stuff!
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

Had a root around and found enough for lunch. I know they work out expensive for potatoes, but they are delicious, and cost less than oysters or a packet of fags....and give me a lot of pleasure.

Hi All,

I acquired my allotment in January so am pretty new to all this and we bought some 'Christmas Potatoes' at a local garden centre in August. I recall when planting them, my allotment neighbour came over to chat and asked what i was planting - when I told him, he had a little chuckle and said something along the lines of "even the experts can't grow Christmas spuds here".

Well, they grew and the foliage died off after the first frosts in November, I cut it back and left the earth alone. I am pleased to say, we have been digging potatoes out of the ground since mid-December and had a great crop out of about 12 plants. They are not huge, but at least egg sized - some twice as large and the odd one three times. I still have about four plants left to go.

Not sure if I was just very lucky or as it's been quite mild things were different, but we were very pleased with the results and could help but take my friend a few over today   8) We didn't cover them or do anything different, but they tasted fantastic and roasted really well.

I hope you all had a great Christmas!
Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.

WOW!

The mild weather was a bit on your side, but it is an impressive achievement that should have won you a few brownie points  :D

Thanks all! Feel a bit of a fraud really as apart from plant them, I didn't really do anything else! Think we got lucky with the weather though and will try again next year.
