Moving newly planted fruit bushes
« on: December 13, 2011, 16:36 »
Today I was offered a council allotment. I am very pleased, because it is very close to my house and will be cheaper than the private allotment I am renting right now. The thing is, just a few weeks ago I planted some bare root stock gooseberry, black currant and rasp canes on my 'current' one. Can I move them having planted them so recently?  I guess if I can't move them this year I will keep renting the part of the plot they are on for the next year then move them next winter but that will obviously be a bit of a ball ache. Anyone got some experience /advise?

Yes moving them should be fine.  Just dig a bit of a ball if the roots have started to grow and all should be well

In addition, best to dig the holes for them on the new plot before you start digging them up, and cover the rootballs with something to stop the roots drying out.

Make sure you water well throughout winter as well as next year if it's not frozen or waterlogged.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
