« on: November 25, 2011, 21:12 »
  hi

i have just taken on a new plot, which is bare ....soil is sodden at mo so im not going to dig/fork over but is it advisable to put down well rotted manure? if so over the whole plot or leave some manure free for your less loving manure veggies??

ps its a half plot

I'm in the process of digging my plot over at the mo' as and when the weather allows. I have free access to manure which  is about four months old. After digging, I'm putting around 4" of muck on top and then leaving nature to do it's work over the winter months. Around the end of march, I'll just rotovate the lot in.

It is advised to leave manure-free the areas where root crops (parsnips, carrots) will be grown next year.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Theres not many places 'sodden' at the moment anywhere in the UK if you have a drainage problem seriously look at it before you commit to the plot.

Congrats on getting your plot nicknic, it's a great feeling isn't it!!  I put my manure all over our plot few weeks ago.  We're fairly new to it all as well we've had 2 seasons growing.  Last year was not as good as the spring and summer the year before when we first got our half plot, but even last year we managed some success with almoste everything.  It just took longer to grow and didn't last as all.  A few weeks ago was the first time I'd manured as when we first got ours it was already spring.  Hoping for bumper crops next year.

I hope all the people on your site are as friendly and helpful as they are on ours.  If they are, and you have water buts and this website, you shouldn't go far wrong!!  ;)

Thanks yes i have inherited a huge tank!! I was involved in a garden share this summer it was covered in brambles and hadnt had anything grown on it for 50 years!! so it was virgin soil..so to speak very nutritious so had bumper crops .....so i think i have a bigger challenge now!! Iv gone for the plot as i have a local water supply and a she close at hand.

And I'm in the Borders. You can have some rain if you like for nowt! Waterlogged up here, no chance of digging at all. Sick of it!

We haven't had any proper rain for weeks odd bit of drizzle now and then, not complaining though I've been able to get my new plot sorted in a few weeks rather than months between the rain and snow that I expected to be battling against  :)
