I read somewhere that a pop hole must not be on hinges but must slide down guillotine style.  There was a reason but I can't remember it.

I'd like mine hinged so that I can pin it up during the day and keep rain off the entry way.

Any comments?

it is purely a matter of choice, if it is a sliding upwards door then it usually can be replaced with a auto pop hole opener, however out of all my coops I have two Eglu classics and they  have doors that open sideways on a pivot system (pretty muck like your hinged idea  ).

Mine is on a hinge that is affixed at the bottom so that when open it doubles as a ramp for them to walk up into it! We have a bolt at the top to lock it shut at night.
I'm no expert but we've had ours for 6 months and never had a problem with it - just need to keep it clean or it won't close properly!

Yes, I've just learnt that - mine slides side to side and is a bit gunged up!
