Scalyleg - not getting better
« on: December 03, 2011, 01:00 »
I tried vaseline for seven days then surgical spirit 30 second dip weekly after that and she still has a lot of raised scales after four weeks.

I found this on another forum:

"I just went through a round of leg mites with a couple of chickens that came from a different flock. We started with the vaseline remedy but that was too messy. What we ended up doing is using an old coffee can and filling it with used vegetable oil and dunking the chickens legs in it up to the feathers. It is easiest done with two even though I did it myself.
We treated the chickens once a week for three weeks. They started looking better after the first treatment but didn't start laying until the fourth week.

For the coop we coasted the roosting poles with vegetable oil and sevin dust throughout. It has now been about three months and I have had no re occurrence but plan on dusting the coop again soon. "

Should I give this a go, try the same again or be more patient?
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

I read somewhere on this forum that Frontline is effective against scaly leg as well as lice. Haven't tried it myself though (except on my cats!!)

Thank you - we have done Frontline too - should have said.  I've read Aunt Sally's notes.

I saw the recent post about liquid paraffin which seems a bit harsh perhaps...   Vegetable oil seems a gentler way to go.

the scales will remain raised until she next moults and are replaced with fresh scales.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I second what joyful says the scales settle after the next malt. If you cant actually see the eggs/larvae around the vent area then you have probably gotten rid of them already especially if you have used frontline.

My little one looked awful for a year til she malted and then they grew back better not brilliant but better.

Good luck
