Lawn aeration with a rotavator?
« on: November 02, 2011, 21:02 »
Has anyone tried to aerate a lawn using a rotavator?  Is there any reason I shouldn't (with the appropriate attachment of course)?

Does anyone have an aerator attachment that they can post a picture of so that I see what it is I'm looking for?

Attached is a cutting from an old Wolseley Merry Tiller brochure. The current US maker still sells them but at $300 + for a set of four I don’t think the UK Merry Tiller importer bothers to stock them. I have used these and they do a good job, but changing direction is hard work. In the early 1960s Wolseley marketed Sisis star wheel aerators that trailed behind the Merry Tiller in a frame.

The problem I have experienced with hollow tine airators is that unless the soil is stone free ,bits chip off and block the channels. Also if the soil moisture level is not ideal then blockages can also occur.

Honda sell the same as Mantis (scarifier, edger and slitter) for the FG110.  Works  quite well but not cheap (but cheaper than buying a dedicated aerartor) if you have the Honda tiller.

Thanks.  I'll see if the Honda FG110 fitting is the same as the F400.

Unfortunately modern Honda attachments won't fit older models (such as the F400).  Has anyone ever had made/made attachments for a rotavator?  Where do I start?  Is it prohibitively expensive?

Not expensive but time consuming
