Pottering in the plot....
« on: November 24, 2011, 18:41 »
.....and had a lovely surprise. My spring psb has started to throw out spears. Not all the plants, so hopefully it should last a fair while.

Sort of makes up for the lacy effect on the Tuscan kale and chard. :(

On another note, the geraniums (pelargoniums) still in the beds have started flowering well again. Must be time for another frost.

Glad to here your broc starting to sprout still waiting for mine :)
Give me a sense of humor, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humour out of life,
And pass it on to other folk.
Happy new year to you all xx

That's good Toscs, the stuff really has done well this year hasn't it!

We bought some calabrese plugs only a couple of months or so ago, and only yesterday, I saw a huge head, about the size of a grapefruit, so that's coming home on Sunday!

I hope when it's cut, that I'll get some side shoots, but as I've lost the breed name (don't think it ever had one), I don't know what will happen...

Reading John's notes, it seems we will, but also, a bad spell of weather can clobber them a bit, judging by the comments here and there.

So what's happened to your chard?

I assume slugs. Usually get an attack just as there is enough to pick! I sowed a new row a few weeks ago and that has got going now. The first lot has done us since late spring, and it's the pale stuff. The second lot is rainbow and seems lees holy! There is a wall on three sides of my mini plot, and while I get protection from weather, it's also a nice place for the dreaded molluscs to hang out. It is fully netted as we have the evil little black beast to keep off and have resident pigeons, so the birds can't get to the slugs and snails. I'm hoping it will protect the psb if it snows, they were hammered last year and are bigger plants this year. We will start using some leaves soon to minimise the area the snow can settle.

It's mad, isn't it? I have seeds germinating all over the place and this time last year it was snowing!
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

The more the weeds germinate now, and get hoed off - the less there are to deal with in the spring....Well that's my reasoning anyway  ;)

I've just had 3 days off work and spent it sorting out my new plot, some of the bare root strawberry plants I planted 4 weeks ago are flowering! Strange Autumn so far.

As is ours! The birdsong on Sunday when I was down doing the horses was amazing. I don't normally hear it as I start work so early.

Not sure it will Alan!

Hope it will stay mild, as we're saving a fortune on heating, but I'm sorry you're getting the cold bits...

Toscs, I was just thinking of horses today, when I forked out the first barrow of 'black gold'...

Beautiful manure, over 8 months old, (young), and smelling as sweet as a nut...
