Chicken run design - what do you think?

It's quite simple so a verbal description may suffice.

6' long 4' wide 2' high.  Galvanised 2" 3mm weldmesh.  A pop hole at one end and a 1' fox proof apron all around (weighed down by bricks).  Some shade provided.

It will sit on my lawn and her ladyship (I have ony one hen) will enter via a hen sized covered gangway from her secure henhouse.  It can be moved around and of course a hen sitter will visit morning and evening but hoping it's secure enough to leave the pop hole open if necessary.

I can get the ironmonger to cut it out from two sheets of 8' x 4'.  I can assemble it and hoping it will be easily collapsible/stored.

One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

Hello :)
Your run sounds fine for one hen but I would really think about getting a friend for her as hens are social birds and she will be lonely on her own!

I know - I've agonised over it - maybe in the spring - let's see how much damage one hen sustains on my garden.

Have you thought about Bantams?
Bantams don't make much mess, especially the true bantams (eg Pekin, Belgian, Serama, Dutch, Silkie etc)
They make fantastic pets, eat less, make less mess, need less room, are very pretty.... Can you tell I'm a big fan?!  ;)
You won't get as many eggs and they will be smaller (but I prefer them as the yolk is not much smaller then a large breed yolk but there is less white!) As a companion chicken, I think it could be the perfect solution for you?
 :)

Hello
Yes it might.
I'm nursing this one rescue at the moment and its a steep learning curve.  One day at a time - thank you for the good idea.

Chooks really dont do well on their own. They need a fellow chook, especially at night, when they snuggle up together for warmth. They talk to each other, and really can get unwell if on their own. :(  PLEASE get her a friend  ;)

Thank you - you are a true chickin' luvin' person!

I had a 'rescue' as a child and we kept her effortlessly for five years - she had our huge garden to herself - I think she was fine.

If this one seems unhappy in any way I'll adopt another rescue but she is doing all the happy hen stuff and sleeps on a shelf on a newspaper!  I really think she is OK.
