White Poppy Seed
« on: November 30, 2010, 14:09 »
I came across some white poppy seeds in an online shop. I'm due to buy some more poppy seed anyway, but has anyone used or come across white poppy seed, in breadmaking for instance? I don't, personally, think it will look as nice as the blue ones but is there a great difference in flavour that would make me want to try these?

I've used white poppy seed in a chicken korma, pre soaked in Rogan Josh and as an ingredient to biryani paste I made at Indian cookery classes

Not tried the white myself as I'm not fond of Indian cooking, but I did find this bit from Wiki:

In Indian cuisine, white poppy seeds are added for thickness, texture and also give added flavor to the recipe. Commonly used in the preparation of korma, ground poppy seed, along with coconut and other spices, are combined as the masala to be added at the end of the cooking step. It is quite hard to grind them when raw, so they are normally dry fried, and then mixed with a little water to get the right paste consistency.

I have an electric Moulinex herb mill which I use for all my spice grinding and pastes. Brilliant little tool  :)

Thanks for the tip, but I wouldn't need to grind them for bread. ;) :)

No, they're very small. While you're making bread though you could make a curry to dunk it in  :D

Well that is true. :D Funny how this thread came back. When I asked the question almost a year ago, no-one had anything to say. ::) Shows the power of the forum search facility, or something.   :)

It made me dig out my curry book which I compiled when I did my classes.  I had to laugh at our teacher's recipes which typically would start  "over a low fire ............"   :D
