Chickens and fireworks
« on: October 30, 2011, 00:54 »
Hi, I am still enjoying my 4 rescue battery Hens, they appear happy enough, and are very friendly. They now have a large run with the house in the middle, so the bullying has virtually stopped. What I am concerned abot now, is how do you  think they will react to loud bngs and flashes. We are having a firework party this week, do you think they will just sleep through it, or become distressed. I have thought about putting an old piece of carpet over the house. What do you think? Thanks for your help.

It depends on the type of coop you have.  Mine has windows so I'm going to block them out on fireworks night, and close the pop-hole to the coop.  If yours doesn't have windows then the light won't be a problem.  Anything you can do to muffle the noise would be good.

I wouldn't worry too much. As Lindeggs says make sure you close the pophole as soon as you can after they go in for the night.

I kept an ear out for mine on Guy Fawkes night last year but they seemed absolutely fine. They should feel safe & secure in the hen house - if they didn't they wouldn't go up there to roost!

it was my first year last nov and I worried about them but in the end no need they slept through it no bother. but if your having a party yourself I'd make sure they are well away from the fun and games .

Mine have been out in the garden when some idiot let off a big firework in the middle of the day and they didn't even blink.

Never had any problems with them overnight during firework season  :)

Hi,  Yes I've been a bit worried as only got mine last weekend, when I got them I did ask the lady that i brought them from the same question about fireworks.  She said as long as they are in their coop and the door closed they should be fine.
