So the rasps don't need the fence for support like the Tays do?

No.

It doesn't much matter - one root/stem to go around with the hoe -, close enough as fits for easy running up on the wall. You will need a metal eye and wire frame for this or such like. If ever need to get to the fence, you just move the whole lot with plant to the ground. 8)

dont forget, tayberries have extremely fragile stems & need securing to the fence every 12-18inches.It's frustrating to see months of growth snap in the wind. The fruit are too large for the stems. In my experience the thornless strain do not fruit as well as thornless tayberries, but that could be due to any number of factors!

Interesting you saying that, since most would say they do not really need any support. Like with blackberries, we tie them to get by.

There could be differences between varieties, of course. The thornless one is commonly said to be not such a heavy cropper as compared, but perfectly enough for the home gardener though. Aren't the birds stealing yours by any chance?

Judd if it helps you to know this, I have several tayberries, logan berries and blackberries (some thornless, some not)

They are planted six inches from the base of a chain link fence, and the new growth is tied to the fence to keep each 'branch' separate from its neighbours. Sometimes they grow through the fence and I have to get them back to the right side.

When the growth has fruited and begun to die down, I cut it right out at the base and then tie in the new shoots as they grow. Some new growth needs tying in a bit sooner that the old ones being removed so I try to keep these separate to make it easier to cut out the old stuff.

They get fed with FBB in February and watered when things get dust dry.

As I said, hope that helps.
