How much cabbage is too much?
« on: October 20, 2011, 15:17 »
My three girls are munching their way through a whole spring cabbage a day.

Is this too much?

They're all stuffing down the layers pellets as well so they're getting a balanced diet as far as I can see.  Could it be that the days are getting colder so they need more food to keep them warm?

Maybe I should try giving them some warm mash in the mornings.

Or maybe they just love cabbage

I'm not an expert but my instinct is that they know what they need.   Just make sure that they eat enough of the layers pellets.  Perhaps you could give them the cabbage in the afternoon so that they eat layers pellets first.

Do they have access to the pellets all the time, so they can eat all they want?  If so, they are probably fine wolfing down the cabbage.  But beware - a lot of foods have the same effect on chickens as they do on humans...   You might end up with very farty chooks!

Yes, they have access to layers pellets and fresh water all day every day so it must be that they just love cabbage - and oregano - I used to have two lovely big oregano plants in the garden but now I just have stumps.  Oh well, back to buying dried herbs in Morrisons for me until I replant (and fence of)f the herb garden in the spring  ::)
