Have I forgotten anything?
« on: October 29, 2011, 09:34 »
As a Christmas end of December festival prezzy for my husband, myself and our little boy have bought a funky tin lunchbox (covered in tractors!) and have filled it with packets of seeds for the allotment.

I've tried to include everything we'll need for the plot next year, but could you have a quick look and see if I've forgotten anything please? (we saved pumpkin and butternut seeds so I'll pop those in envelopes too)

Obviously I can't put potatoes, onions and garlic in there (he'll get those himself anyway) but I'd like all the seeds to be in his tin.

I've gone for a mixture of 'sensible' and 'fun to grow' varieties to keep it interesting for our little boy (nearly 3 years old). I've also got a packet of lollipop sticks (cheap labels!) and a shiny new hand trowel (because he keeps pinching my pink one!).

We've grown peas and beans in the past but we don't eat many beans, and the peas are easy/cheap enough to get from the supermarket so we're not going to bother growing any this time.

What a lovely idea  :D

(Although I've edited your post as it's an in-forum joke that we don't allow reference to the C-word until late December  ;) )

Do you have a greenhouse?  You'll struggle with the watermelons I think.

What about courgettes and spring onions?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

We have a polytunnel (10 or 12ft). Just one of the cheap type that rustles in the wind, but it has served us well this year. I was hoping watermelons might at least try to grow in there. We'll try anything once anyway - live and learn and all that.

Hmm spring onions are a good idea, thank you. I don't think we've grown those before, only radish. Courgettes are a big no-no though. The other half detests them and refused to have them on the plot  :nowink:
We grew cucumbers one year and they did well. We didn't eat many, gave most away, so we'll rule that out this time too.

At least with the free delivery offers at most seed places at the minute I can just get a packet or two as I go along. But I knew there'd be a few I'd forgotten about to start with!

And it is a further forum in-joke that non-moderators try to find as many ways as possible to refer to the C-word without actually mentioning it.

I probably shouldn't mention that I've finished wrapping up the gifts for our little boy then, for the upcoming festival of red-coated round-bellied men  :tongue2:

How about asparagus pea, Pak choi and cut and come again lettuces or salad leaves?     Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Years ago someone gave me a stainless steel widger and if said winter visitor gave me another one in a fab new seed tin I'd be well chuffed ...... Great idea and sure he'll be delighted

Thank you all. Lovely ideas.

The best bit for me is having full control over what will be grown on our plot next year  ;)
