Beetroot or chard root??
« on: October 13, 2011, 15:09 »
In spring, I planted all my beetroot and chard together in a square bed. The chard has been doing great after a slow start, but I still have beetroot in there that have little top growth and have never bulbed up.

I made a pretty design rather than rows and have lost track of what's what.

Now I have some big roots poking out that look like they could be yellow cylindrical beetroot but I'm not 100%.  If it looks like beetroot and tastes like beetroot, should I just assume it is beetroot?

Beetroot and chard together with perpetual spinach and sugar beet are different forms of the same plant.

Chard has thick leaf stems and does not develop a swollen root. Whatever it is it will do you no harm.

Chard roots can get quite fat like beetroot, and yes they are all the same family and all edible :)

I was quite shocked at how big chard roots can get, especially the white veined ones.... vast
