galic and cayenne pepper.
« on: January 09, 2012, 10:02 »
Hi folks, a very happy new year to you all and to your "gals and guys" Has anyone ever used a mixture of garlic and cayenne pepper on their girls to help heal cuts/abrasions? Have heard this helps. If anyone has used it, how do you prepare the salve, by crushing the garlic and adding the cayenne pepper or some other method? All advise gratefully accepted. Thanks.

No!  Would you rub chilli powder into a wound on yourself?  I wouldn't.  I know garlic is a good healer but I've not used it on the girls. I've used purple spray which is an antiseptic wound spray made for the purpose. People also sprinkle on cornflour I think which helps dry the wound but I've always used the purple spray

you can use garlic in their water or feed them some in small doses but I wouldn't advise rubbing that or cayenne into a wound myself.
You can buy wound powder from equine places - this helps stop the bleeding and is antiseptic. Cornflour will do at a push but isn't antiseptic. Purple spray is good for grazes and to disguise redness.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks for replies, it's certainly best to seek advise. Purple spray it is then.

Garlic has been suggested to have antibacterial properties but generally when taken orally. Cayenne pepper has no suggested antibacterial properties although capsicum (the active ingredient) is used in pain relief preparations like deep heat so definitely not something to use on an open wound ever.
