I haven't seen a recipe on the forum, but here is a typical one:

Don't dither: get a slow cooker:

Stews on low over about 12 hours (I tend to put stuff in cold then shove in some boiling water to get it started): any meat, any root veg, add mushrooms last 30mins when you get home while you do the rice or mash or whatever.

Porridge in the mornings for the whole family to eat at different times - just use a timer so it starts 3hours before the 1st serving.

Rice pudding 2-3 hours: just time for a brisk dogwalk on the beach & home to a warming treat.

Get the biggest slow cooker you can find: mine is M**phy R***rds & was around £25 - on offer at the time - and it holds about 6litres, so when it's filled with stew it serves 6 adults generously and left over stew is brilliant blended & frozen as what my family call "stewp" ready for a soup & bread & cheese night.

Red cabbage for Christmas...
Chilli con carne.....

If you can do it in the oven in 2-3 hours, you can do it in the slow cooker... my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

I might need a second pot as I struggle to wash up the porridge in time to put in the stew for the evening before I go to work, then get it clean again for the next night's porridge!

Thanks all.  So the concensus seems to be that most makes are fine but decent sized capacity is a must.

Shall invest I think  :D

My Trashco one has quite a large capacity and was quite cheap.

Just going to have to make chili con carne tomorrow after reading all this. ::)

Just do it ....  you wont regret it!  Even chick peas - so much cheaper dried, soak all day, cook all night a big batch and freeze ready to use .....  Curries too - particularly kormas and daals  - are brilliant cooked long and slow in the slow cooker.

Funny story - a few years ago we had the builders in and I was working intermittently at home and on client's site.  One day I chucked a veg stew into the slow cooker - mostly frozen ingredients and a hot stock -  and ran out the door suited and booted as they arrived (at 7.30am).  Next day working from home I got a request not to do that again .....  they spent all day feeling hungry with the lovely smell wafting from the kitchen .....   :D :D
