Ivermectin
« on: October 04, 2011, 17:58 »
My chicken was given ivermectin (I hope thats right) for diahorea and scaly leg.  Shes an ex batt and he said she isnt laying anymore.  He could feel that there was no space between her pelvic bones.
Well, I put her back in the with the others last night and she seems alot better today.  I went out there this afternoon and there was an egg in the nest box.  I have 13 chickens so it could be any of them.  They are not laying much at the moment as they are moulting.
Im really worried that it could be the chickens that was given the ivermectin.
If the vet said that she is not laying anymore is that for definate?
What if you eat an egg from a chicken that has been given ivermectin?
Am I worrying over nothing?   :)

I don't think it is licensed for poultry so most vets suggest an egg withdrawal period of 7 days after treatment.
Staffies are softer than you think.

The ivermectin would have been prescribed because it deals with internal and external parasites (in your case probably worms and scaly leg mite).  As Joyfull said, it's not officially approved for use in poultry so the vet would need to tell you that, and they usually advise a 7 to 14 day egg with-holding period just to be safe.

If your vet felt your chicken's pin bones and said she wasn't laying then that would be correct.  It would be physically impossible for an egg to get out of the space between the bones so you can be sure it wasn't her that laid the egg.

That's not to say she will never lay again though, so keep an eye on her comb and wattles to see if they plump up again when she is in better health.  It's worth learning the technique used by the vet to feel her pin bones.  Comes in very handy if you're wondering who's laying.

Thank you Lindeggs.  So it'll be safe to eat this egg.  What a worrier I am!!   ::)  She is a 3 1/2 year old ex-batt so I think it would be unlikely that she'll start to lay again ?  The vet said that shes the equivalent age of a 6 year old pure breed.
Yes, I must learn how to feel her pin bones.  Her comb is still red and healthy looking.

Never say never! I have an older hen who had stopped laying for over a year. She had slipped down the pecking order in her old age but lo and behold this week she has produced 2 eggs! And I know it's her as I've caught her deep inside my bed of nastirtiums bedded down nicely in a little hollow, rosey away and half an hour later - hey presto! She seemed as surprised as me! The eggs where on the smallish side compared to when she was in regular lay and a bit calcium ridged but tasted yummy! Good old girl! She's now strutting round the garden with a new found attitude! Happy chicken - happy owner!

Aaaww that's lovely Freebirdy. :)  She must be happy and healthy to start laying again.
