Where do they come from?  Do the hang around in wood, live on the ground, get brought in on bedding, get passed on from wild birds or do they cohabit with red mite?

From what I can gather they can live in the soil as they are mites, but its easily treatable so long as you spot it early, use ivermectin drops or rub legs with vaseline and don't be tempted to pull off the scales.

I discovered that painting the chickens legs with liquid parrafin is the easy answer, legs return to super smooth condition within days of one treatment. Use whenever it is seen to reappear. Its magic and the hens have no visible distress either.

That's interesting. Two weeks after starting the vaseline and surgical spirit treatment she still has some old flaky scales.
