Should I prepare the coop and run now?
« on: September 19, 2011, 21:04 »
Going to pick my girls up on Saturday from Shropshire.

Quick question should I be starting to do things this week? I have finished the coop and the run, foxproofed around the run, got my ex bat crumb, feeders and drinkers, and lots of other bits and pieces.

Should I be treating the ground in the run and diatom slurry the coop now, etc?

Have you got a chicken friendly vet lined up yet? If not may I suggest you find one now before you need one.

Have you identified a bank manager to give you a loan for the vet fees and a psychiatrist to get you though the trauma?

Definitely do the diatom slurry this week.  It will have plenty of time to dry properly before you introduce the chickens.

Do you have a nice comfy chair ready near the run?  You will be spending a crazy amount of time out there bonding or just watching the girls' antics.

Unless you have very recently had chooks on the ground you should not need to do anything to it. Good luck with your girls :)

Same applies to your coop if it's new, you don't actually need to treat it with anything, only if it's previously housed other birds. And you might as well make use of the empty space in the crates by putting a few bottles or cans of something in them to sup on while you're watching your new girls. :D

personally I would get the diatom slury painted on any gaps in the coop and along the perches, good luck and enjoy

The diatom slurry is a preventative against red mites, so it does need to be painted on before any birds have lived in the coop.  It will be too late once you have an infestation!
