lunch at the plot
« on: September 10, 2011, 10:22 »
As the colder weather encroaches, I wondered what others take to sustain them and stave of the chill.

We have hot pasties, wrapped in foil, tea towels and then carried in a small insulated bag; huge cookies with white chocolate and dried cranberries, flasks of tea/coffee (one for me , one for Mr Sunny) and then will top up with raspberries and an apple from one of the trees.

and for you?

My plot is in my garden so it depends on what I fancy - but as the colder weather comes on a nice home made leek and potato soup hits the spot, or maybe baked beans on toast.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Luckily plot is down my road, so I can pop home for lunch and a cuppa (and to use the facilities as none on the plot which is inconvenient for girlies )

We have a small camping stove in the shed on which we boil the Kettle for Tea or Coffee.
We have been known to use it for a Fry Up too!

Soup is great for warming when gardening- or the one I make tends to be known as Stewp- more lumps than the average soup, but not quite as chunky as stew!!

Only downside is if you eat too much, it makes digging tricky afterwards!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I make a  big pot of soup from all the spare veg in the fridge including, half heads of cabbage, turnip, swede, peas, beans ect. Chuck them all in a pot with some stock and a couple of handfulls of pearl barley and a good few grinds of black pepper.  Cook it all up, leave to go cold, devide into plastic bags and drop into the freezer. Grab a bag or two on my way to the lotti and heat up on gas ring.  Lovely with a couple of crusty rolls & butter. I do need a bit of a rest though, before I can get going again.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I have a small butane gas ring in my plot shed where I brew up and cook. I make soup, omelettes, chips etc .  I have some oven racks so I can rig up a barbecue on bricks if needs be. Mind you I have a barbecue bucket too  :)  I do like to make myself nutella and banana sarnis to go with my tea  :)  I always have Kendal mint cake in the shed as it doesn't go off and the mice don't seem to like it  :D  My plot neighbour makes toast on her lotty gas ring  :)

You make Stewp too?!  I thought I was the only one who called it that!

My Stewp always starts with a cup of red lentils and about a litre of boiling water... then it is pretty much "anything goes" from there.  Usually fried onion and garlic, all the spare veges from garden or fridge, whatever takes my fancy at the time.  I like a winter soup to be warming so I add a spoonful of curry powder or garam masala.  Mmmm!

I take some in a flask if I'll be away from home, and whatever is left gets frozen in single-serves.
