Planting out shallots
« on: September 16, 2011, 21:00 »
Hi all!  :)
Judging by my area, when's best? A guy on the site leaves his until December.
Thanks in advance, Mash  :)

The old tradition is to plant on the shortest day and harvest on the longest  :D

But lots plants them a little sooner.

Best not too soon though or they have too much soft green top growth to stand the winter and might die off  :(

Last year mine went in about first week of November when I came back from holiday  :D

The pack from Wilks says "plant Sept", hence my confusion.
Never grown shallots before and your advice makes a LOT of sense. Thankyou muchly  :)

It might depend on the variety, but I have only ever planted shallots in early spring.

We're putting in ours this winter, because last (well, this last spring), they went in during early Feb, and it was so dry, they just didn't thrive. We lost the lot.

So, this year, they'll go in when there's enough moisture to get the roots well down and they could well work that way.
