Blood from chooks nose!
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:24 »
Asking this on behalf of my brother-in-law. He finally got his 3 chooks on Sunday after 6 weeks of waiting for them to be old enough to be released from the breeder/vaccinations etc. 2 silver laced Wyandottes and a smashing little buff pekin.
Today when he let them out from thier coop and did his morning checks, he noticed one of the wyandottes had blood coming from a nostril!
Obviously he has no idea if this was due to a peck whilst in the coop or something more to worry about like illness! The bird is not sneezing, is acting normally, feeding, drinking, having a good old scratch round the garden.
Ideas folks? What should he look out for, for signs of illness? None of my birds have ever been ill so I can't advise on blood from a nostril!!

Hi there. Not sure what blood coming from a nostril may indicate but as your brother in law has only just collected the birds I would be very tempted to contact the breeder for their advice.

If it is something contagious then with such a short space of time I would have thought that she would have picked up the illness at the breeders.

They haven't been exposed to a bad infestation of Red Mite have they?  RM can infest the roof of a chx mouth in very bad cases.   Gape worm is another possibility.  Is she gaping and do you know if they have been recently wormed with flubenvet.  If not it would be a good idea to worm them.

Otherwise I suspect injury if there's no other signs of depression, wheezing, rattly breathing, sneezing etc.

Best of luck

Thanks Hillfooter for your reply. Now looks like it might just have ben a bit of pecking going on in the coop at night. Bro-in-laws birds were all wormed at the breeders in August so not due again just yet. The breeders place is spotlessly clean, DEFRA registerd and all the coops are sanitised every week, hence that's why we go to buy our birds from there. I checked for gapeworm, nothing, no rattles or wheezing and no signs of worms in her trachea when I looked in her throat.
So... will put it down to a squable over roosting rights as the birds had only been move 2 day previously so prob just finding their place in their new home. Panic over!!
