Fried lice advice!
« on: September 14, 2011, 19:19 »
Hi all,
I have a question about lice and frontline.

For the first time ever, we've had the little b***s   But the vet has rescued us with frontline spray and I've done them all in all the important places!  My question is how long till I do them again, please?  Will lice powder be sufficient for a while and then re-spray in a few weeks' time?  The vet said no need to withdraw the eggs from the menu.. ;)
Thanks C

As far as I know they should be sprayed again on the seventh day to catch any eggs.

The powder I think is fairly useless (I use it because I got a big tub and it's a waste not to. I won't replace it when it's used up). But far more effecient in my opinion are the dust baths that the chx do themselves (usually straight after I've powdered them  :D ) Otherwise I just check mine over carefully about every 2-3 weeks in the summer, less often in the winter. If I found lice I'd treat then (with frontline as you are) but not otherwise.

For lice you can use FL as a spot on using the cat formula.  Four drops on the skin at the back of the NECK for large fowl or two for bantams.  It's important to put it here as they can't get to it with their beaks.  Some people use spray under the wings but that exposes them to the risk of ingesting it which isn't recommended.  Placed on the skin (not feathers) there no egg withdrawal.

Once every 5 weeks while there are signs of the lice.

If the louse powder is the one made by barrier I suspect it's no more effective than a dust bath as the active ingredient is a mosquito repellant and is the same ingredient as used in their equally ineffective Red Mite powder.  I don't know if there are other more effective powders but if there are they will need to be based on an active ingredient which is an insecticide of some kind and it will likely have egg withdrawal requirement.

Thanks!  Pretty much what I expected, but glad to have the confirmation!  Nesta was a bit off colour this a.m, but she's fine again now (and she's getting on a bit).  Bluebelle was the worst affected and I've just checked her and she's not scratching and there's no sign of lice  :D :D :D
