SAD
« on: September 06, 2011, 21:40 »
Had Broody on 6 eggs - only 2 hatched  (24 hrs apart) sadly found one of the chicks dead on nest this morning - not sure why - I had noticed that it seemed listless yesterday and not going to the broody when she called - I did see it eat and drink but not much and it was a little unsteady on its feet - although I was not sure if I was imagining that. Also its eyes were not as bright and it generally was not running around like the other chick, The other one was always a little bigger (was born 1 day before the one that died) and still seems very lively. Have cleaned out nest and changed bedding - any ideas what might have caused this? No funny coloured poo's or anything that looked amiss - poor little thing was only about 9 days old. Hope that the other one will be fine

Sorry to hear about the little one. I've raised loads of chicks and sometimes this just happens - they are so vulnerable when young.
Just keep an eye on the other chick, look at the poo (to make sure there's no blood) and make sure it's bottom is clean and free from any pasty substance.  If all is well, then just let Mum do what they do best and I'm sure the little one will do fine.

So sorry to hear about your little one  :(
I can't add anything to what Helenaj says.  Good luck with your other chick.

Hi
Thanks for your replies - yes keeping an eye on the other seems fine at moment so hoping it will be ok.
