chicken coops
« on: September 04, 2011, 12:27 »
Hello people

I am looking at getting my first coop and would like to know where the best ones are online and at the best value for money.

Also is it any easier to make my own or is this more expensive

Many thanks

Depending on how many chooks you want to keep, how much space you have, whether you want an integrated run etc, the options are vast. After surfing the internet for ages for our latest house, which are so much more expensive this side of the channel, I see that the options are vast. One thought though, which we had considered, was buying a cheap small garden shed, building a run around it, and adapting it by putting in the perches and nesting boxes, plus carving out a door for them. You can get a small cheap shed for around £150 in the UK, you pay double that (and the rest) for a decent sized ready made purpose built house.
Best thing, is to search chicken coop/houses/runs on t'internet, and see what comes up.
Everyone has their own views on this and their own tastes.
Anyway, Good Luck!!

I agree with Mary - if you have space convert a shed but do your research first as a good design goes a long long way to happy chooks and even happier owners. It also depends on your space allowance. Do bear in mind that few chook owners ever stop ant three!!!!!!!!!! ;)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

We got ours recently from the Domestic Wildfowl Trust, in Honeybourne. We have the advantage of living fairly close so went to collect, but they do have an internet site I believe. Compared to the (slightly) cheaper one we bought off the internet first time round, this is so much better. Better designed and built, easier to get in and clean it, and looks good too.

I've just had my first experience of red mites and really wish I had invested in a plastic coop.

Eglu Go.
If you have a small garden, its probably best to buy the run, if you have a large garden, and want a large run, build it yourself, 2x2 inch pressure treated timber from an local timber yard and 1x1inch 1.6g weldmesh from The Hills of Devon, or another supplier.

Plastic is just so easy, two minutes, a hosepipe and its cleaned and reassembled.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended
