Rhubarb DEAD!
« on: September 07, 2011, 18:31 »
I've only just got an allotment and have never grown anything except my rhubarb plant.
The last time I took some off it the stalks were hollow and since then nothing has happened at all.....It looks totally dead,no new growth, nothing at all :(
Any ideas or do you think it's an ex plant?
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

I'm guessing it's dying back and going into hibernation.  Just give it a good mulch of manure over winter and it will be fine.  If it's an old plant it might benefit from splitting it in two november time when it's dormant.  Is the rhubarb waterlogged?

It seems to have been a bad year for rhubarb for some reason.  They're usually  toughies but I've lost 5 rhubarb plants this year, not a sign of them anywhere :(

I took a cutting(Don't know if that's the correct term ) from next doors plant about 6-7 years ago and it's been prodigious every year up to now. I'll try splitting it and take some up to my new allotment.
Thanks
At least I've only lost 1 Spana, but it's the only thing I've ever grown.........Up to now

I've lost a couple too. I put it down to the dry, hot April

Going back to the start of this thread, hollow rhubarb stems usually occur when the plant is throwing up seed heads. The seed heads are carried on the hollow stems

I thought I had lost 2 of the rhubarb plants I`d put in in May,they died right back in June/July,I was going to dig them out......but now they are putting new leaves up....so have patience,  and I hope you`ll be pleasantly surprised! :)

Mine comes back every year...puts up some healthy looking stalks, but then just dies and disappears....would be nice if it stuck around long enough to be able to pick some next year!  :D

2/3 of our rhubarb died this year, I thought I'd accidentally Rounduped it but reading this thread maybe it was just sulking, and it has recovered very well///
